Instagram Comment to DM Automation: How It Works and How to Set It Up

Someone comments “PRICE” under your Reel. By the time you see it three hours later, they’ve messaged two competitors. Instagram comment to DM automation fixes that gap.
Instagram comment to DM automation sends a private message to anyone who comments a chosen keyword on your post, Reel or Live, within seconds. It runs through a Meta-approved tool (ManyChat is the best known, with a free plan up to 1,000 contacts as of October 2026) connected to an Instagram professional account. Meta allows one automatic message per comment, sent within 7 days, and you can keep chatting only once the person replies. Setup takes about 15 minutes.
At a glance
- Time: 15 to 20 minutes for your first automation
- Cost: free to start; paid plans from about $15 a month (ManyChat Pro, October 2026)
- Difficulty: easy, no coding
- You’ll get: every keyword comment turned into a private conversation you can follow up
How does Instagram comment to DM automation work?
A tool watches your posts for comments. When a comment contains your keyword, it sends that person a private reply (Meta calls this a “Private Reply”) and, optionally, a short public reply under the comment such as “Sent you a DM.”
- You post with a clear prompt: “Comment GUIDE and I’ll send it to you”
- Someone comments GUIDE
- The tool sends them a DM within seconds
- They tap a button or reply
- You can now send the link, ask a question or book a call
Here is how that looks across different businesses:
- A dental clinic posts a whitening Reel: “Comment SMILE for this month’s price list.”
- A law firm shares a tenant-rights carousel: “Comment CHECKLIST for the free move-out checklist.”
- A home-services company shows a bathroom refit: “Comment QUOTE and we’ll send our booking link.”
- An estate agent posts a new property: “Comment TOUR for the video walkthrough and viewing times.”
What are Meta’s rules for comment to DM?
Meta’s Private Replies documentation sets the limits every tool works within. Knowing them saves you from building a flow that can’t run.
| Rule | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Professional account required | Switch to a Business or Creator account in Instagram settings first. |
| One private reply per comment | Your first DM must do the work. Make it short with one clear next step. |
| Within 7 days of the comment | Comments on older posts won’t trigger a DM after a week. |
| Live comments: during the broadcast only | Once your Live ends, you can’t send private replies to its comments. |
| Follow-ups only after they reply | If they respond, you have 24 hours to keep messaging them. |
That last rule is why good automations end the first DM with a button or a question. A reply opens the conversation properly.
How to set up Instagram comment to DM automation
The steps are almost the same in every tool. We’ll use ManyChat as the example because its free plan is enough to test the idea.
- Switch to a professional account. In your Instagram settings, change your account type to Business or Creator.
- Connect the tool. Sign up for ManyChat (or similar), choose Instagram and log in. Approve the permissions it asks for, including access to messages.
- Create the automation. Pick the trigger for comments on a post or Reel. Choose a specific post or all posts, then enter your keyword.
- Write the public reply. Add two or three versions so they rotate and don’t look robotic.
- Write the DM. Keep it short. Put the link behind a button rather than pasting it in the first line.
- Test it. Comment the keyword from a second account and check the DM arrives, including in message requests.
- Turn it on and tell people. Say the keyword in the caption, in a pinned comment and out loud in the Reel.
Shortcut: If your business runs on WhatsApp, make the DM button open a WhatsApp chat with a ready-made message. Our free WhatsApp Link Generator builds that link in a minute.
Copy-paste messages for your first automation
Swap the [brackets] for your details. Each first DM ends with one action, because you only get one automatic message.

Hi [name], thanks for your comment. Here’s our [month] price list for [service]. Tap below to see it, or reply BOOK and we’ll find you a slot this week.

First DM · Property enquiry (estate agent)
Hi [name], here’s the video tour of [property/area]. Are you looking to buy or rent, and roughly when? Reply and I’ll send viewing times.
Follow-up · After they reply
Great, thanks [name]. The easiest next step is a quick 10-minute call. Here’s my calendar: [booking link]. Or tell me a time that suits and I’ll call you.
Which tool should you use?
Any Meta-approved tool can do the basic job. Pick by where you want the conversation to go next.
| Tool type | Good for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram-first chatbot (e.g. ManyChat) | Most small businesses starting out | Free plan limits: 3 keywords, 1,000 contacts (October 2026) |
| Multi-channel inbox (e.g. Wati) | Teams that also run WhatsApp from one inbox | Compare its pricing with how many chats you actually get |
| Your CRM’s built-in social tools | Businesses that want leads straight in their pipeline | Check it supports comment triggers, not just DMs |
Our pick: Start on ManyChat’s free plan with one keyword on one post. If it brings real enquiries in the first month, then pay for more keywords or move to a tool that feeds your CRM.
What most guides leave out
Most guides are written by the tool vendors, so they stop at “the DM was sent.” Three things matter more than that.
1. Many DMs land in message requests. Instagram files messages from accounts people don’t follow into a separate folder. Your public reply should say “check your message requests.” Inro, one of the tool makers, reports in its own guide that first messages with a button hold up far better than ones with a bare link.
2. Getting the DM isn’t the same as getting a lead. A free guide sent to 500 people is 500 contacts, not 500 customers. Ask one qualifying question in the first message (buying or renting, which service, which area) so you know who to call.
3. Someone still has to answer. The automation starts the chat. If a person replies “how much for Saturday?” and nobody answers for a day, you lose them anyway. Decide who checks replies and how often before you switch it on. The same idea is behind a good WhatsApp auto reply and missed call text back: the instant reply buys you time, it doesn’t replace you.
Watch out: Avoid common keywords like YES or INFO. People type them in normal comments, and you’ll send DMs to people who didn’t ask.
FAQ
Can Instagram send a DM to commenters without a third-party tool?
Not on its own. Keyword comment to DM runs through Meta’s Private Replies feature, which you use via a connected tool. Pick one that is a Meta-approved partner so your account stays safe.
Is comment to DM automation allowed by Instagram?
Yes, when it runs through Meta’s official Private Replies feature. Meta allows one private reply per comment within 7 days, so tools built on that feature stay inside the rules.
Does it work on Reels, carousels and Lives?
It works on feed posts, carousels and Reels. For Lives, replies can only go out while the broadcast is running, according to Meta’s documentation.
Why didn’t someone get my DM?
The most common reasons are that it went to their message requests, they commented after the 7-day window, the keyword was misspelled, or the automation was off. Test from a second account to check.
How much does it cost?
You can start free. ManyChat’s free plan covers up to 1,000 contacts and 3 keywords, and its Pro plan starts at $15 a month, rising with the number of contacts (October 2026).
Can I make people follow me before they get the link?
Some tools offer a “follow first” step. Use it carefully: every extra step loses people, and the goal is an enquiry, not a follower.
